Blues Music Goes Celluloid
The second-annual Florida Blues Film Festival is the celluloid companion to the hooting and hollering revelry that is the Riverwalk Blues and Music Festival. Held at the chic Maxwell Room -- site of many a posh wedding reception -- this film festival will be screening Blues Music Awards' nominated flicks as well as other standout musical films. Sunday's lineup is a hefty one, featuring two spectacular movies that will whet the appetite of diehard blues' aficionados -- We Juke Up in Here! and Muddy Waters & the Rolling Stones Live at the Checkerboard Lounge, Chicago 1981. The former explores the remnants of Mississippi's once-thriving juke-joint culture, examining it through the eyes of Red Paden, proprietor of fabled dive bar Red's Lounge in historic Clarksdale, Mississippi. The latter captures a magical November night in 1981, when the Rolling Stones paid a visit to Muddy Water's blues' club, Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago.
This cinematic celebration of blues begins at noon Sunday at the Maxwell Room, located at 10 S. New River Drive E. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $10. Visit bluesfilmfest.com, or call 954-399-BLUE (2583.)
