Bowling for Nirvana
We'll give the New Age movement this much -- meditation can, in fact, relax you. And if you decide meditating is right for you, then limitless options await as to what type of meditation to pursue. For Robert Stein, the singing bowls of Tibet have proven a favorite meditation method. Yes, singing bowls. They operate in much the same way as a wine glass; the rims of the sonorous bowls are rubbed with sticks, creating a loud hum, which in turn people meditate to. Typical of New Age practices, Stein imbues this type of meditation with beneficent effects it cannot possibly have, and does so in the vaguest terms. "There exists a distinct possibility that musical instruments can support and strengthen the organ system through a mind-body connection," he avers on his website, singingbowlworkshop.com. He goes on to explain how drumming is good for the heart, wind instruments for the lungs, strings for muscles and bones, and bells and singing bowls for the brain and nervous system. He fails to mention why and how these instruments affect the systems in question, but what the hell? Stein leads Tibetan singing bowl meditation at Secret Woods Nature Center (2701 W. State Rd. 84, Dania Beach) at 3 p.m. Reservations are required; cost is $10. Call 954-791-1030. -- Dan Sweeney
All in the Family
Frolic for free at "Family Day"
Free is always good, and the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (1650 Harrison St., Hollywood) appreciates this. That's why it is offering a free "Family Day," featuring educational activities for parents and children. During this month's Family Day, visitors explore one of South Florida's most abundant resources: sand. Children can bring their own sand from the beach or use some of the museum's to create colorful works of art. If you're not feeling the sand vibe, you can also browse the center's visual art exhibits or enjoy a guided tour -- all for free! Festivities run from 1 to 4 p.m. Call 954-921-3274, or visit www.artandculturecenter.org. -- Audra Schroeder
