Between the beaches, the rain forest, Carnaval, and bossa nova, Brazil's sure got a lot going for it. But it's just so far away! A trip to South America's largest country would require planning, lots of vacation time, and a pretty good amount of cash. Happily, you can get a little slice of Brazil right in your own backyard when "Brazil Night IV" hits the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale) this Saturday.
The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. in the Broward Center's lobby with caipirinhas and Clube do Choro. For all of you people with no knowledge of Portuguese, that's Brazilian cocktails and traditional Brazilian chorinho music. While you're having some snacks and swilling back the caipirinhas, check out "The Passions of Children," an exhibit from Rio de Janeiro's Museu Internacional de Arte Naif.
At 8 p.m., the party heads to the center's Au-Rene Theater for a concert featuring opening act Adriana Mezzadri and headliner Jorge Ben Jor. Ben Jor is best-known to audiences outside of Brazil through his hit song "Mas Que Nada," but inside Brazil's borders, the man has been a superstar for decades.
All this should satiate your Brazil yen. Or perhaps it will only whet your appetite. If that's the case, our advice is to get on a plane. Tickets (for the show, not the plane) cost $15, $25, $35, or $45. Call 954-462-0222. -- Dan Sweeney
That's some spicy meat ya got there
While last year's "Jamaican Jerk Fest" was a success, many patrons hungry for the jerk were turned away as food supplies for the more than 5,000 attendees ran low. This year, the festival promises more jerk for your buck, and that's something not even your local adult video store can guarantee. In addition to spicy jerk meats, vegetables, and poultry, the festival features reggae and calypso music, children's games and activities, a domino tournament, Jamaican arts and crafts, and a Jamaican jerk-off. That's a jerk cook-off, OK? By Jamaican jerk masters. OK, enough with the innuendos. The festival starts at noon and takes place at C.B. Smith Park, 900 N. Flamingo Rd., Pembroke Pines.
