Love independent film and despise Hollywood? The Southern Circuit 2013-2014 Tour of Independent Filmmakers comes to the Miramar Cultural Center on Thursday with a screening of Mommy, I'm a Bastard! at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5. The movie follows early-20s filmmaker Max Barbakow as he erects a narrative told through a series of home movies, broadcast-news clips, interviews, testimonials, and candid letters, connecting the stories of three diverse families linked to him through his adoption. The film was originally made to be a tribute to his family, but instead, Barbakow urges family members to explain the circumstances surrounding his adoption immediately after his birth. In the process, Barbakow reveals a decades-old feud between his biological and adoptive families. Barbakow will lead a discussion about the film and his work as a filmmaker after the screening. Barbakow edited the film himself. Follow the steps of an independent filmmaker as he takes his first steps toward a budding career in movies. Afterward, you can ask him how it's done. Miramar Cultural Center is located at 2400 Civic Center Plaza in Miramar. Visit miramarculturalcenter.org, or call 954-602-4500.
