Classic Gender-Bending

For those of us who love a good parody of the classics, Shut Up, Sweet Charlotte! — based on the novel and camp classic film Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) starring Bette Davis — oughta hit the mark. This Southern gothic tale tells the story of Charlotte Hollis (Ricky Graham), a young gal accused of murdering her lover. Eventually her cousin Miriam Deering, played by drag sensation Varla Jean Merman (a.k.a. Jeffery Roberson), shows up to "help" — a nice disguise for her attempt to have Charlotte committed. “If you've seen the movie you will appreciate a lot of the more subtle aspects of the show,” Robertson/Merman declared. “Oh wait! Nothing in this show is subtle.”

See it at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center (Nova Southeastern University campus), 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr. Blvd in Davie. Shows take place Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. Tickets cost $45. Call 954-462-0222, or visit
