Doing Sensuality Right

Like most art forms we Americans import from other countries, tango dancing has been modified, simplified, cartoonified, and de-exotified. It's gotten to the point where genuine tango practitioners look at the moves and body placement of tango dancers in American TV shows and movies and shake their heads in dismay -- like real Chinese ordering takeout from the Jade Palace around the corner. There's no better time to witness how tango is supposed to be danced, as it has been for more than a century by experts from Uruguay and Argentina, the twin birthplaces of traditional tango. Grammy-winning musicians and world-champion tango dancers from these crucial countries (as well as Japan) will perform in Tango Lovers: Tango, Passion, and Sensuality at 9 p.m. Friday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, one of just two U.S. appearances for the show. They will dance to music composed by three of the world's top tango composers, one week before Uruguay celebrates its independence day. The Broward Center is at 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $45 to $65. Call 954-462-0222, or visit
