Dont Recycle Your Date Until After Prom
Most of us have a love/hate relationship with prom. Whether it makes you twiddle your thumbs in recollection of young love, balloon archways, and sneaking out past curfew, or gives you that Carrie feeling, prom remains an integral night in teenage life. Of course most cater directly to straight youth and frown considerably on two prom queens mugging down near the punch bowl.
Pridelines, a local organization that creates a safe, fun, educational haven for Miamis GLTB youth recognizes this dilemma, so its joining forces with Macys and local Shot at Love she-ro Dani Campbell to put on the biggest, best, and most recycled party to date.
Yes, gay prom is officially going green. So while your school hung crepe paper and boring Christmas lights, these kids are salvaging discarded plastics and then refashioning them into illuminated centerpieces and stylized photo backdrops. It doesnt stop there, either. Youth are also encouraged to take recycling on the runway. Yep, these teens know that aluminum cans, caution tape, and other castaways can be reworked into vamptastic couture. (Think Pretty in Pink, meets eco-Project Runway). Each designer will strut his or her stuff down the catwalk for a chance at the most coveted prom titles of all: Fashionista and Fashionisto (although it should be mentioned that Johnson, aka: Christian LaCroix, is leading the competition. Not only has he crafted his whole outfit from construction site finds, hes been contracted by other prom-goers to build their outfits as well.) The magic night happens at Florida International University Wolf University Center (13000 NE 151st St., Miami). Tickets cost $20 for individuals and $30 for couples and include dinner and entertainment. Call 305-571-9601, or visit www.pridelines.org.
