Some say America is a Christian nation, and maybe it is, but others say that this great countrys true religion is football. Not baseball with its brown-eyed handsome men on clean grass but football, the sport in which mean-eyed ugly men collide on the muddy gridiron. Spit flies, bones crunch, and the bowels are rocked as our helmeted warrior priests deliver divine transcendence through physical combat. True believers look on from the couch, keeping the faith over bowls of cheese puffs and cans of cheap beer.
The Super Bowl, of course, is Christmas for Americas football faithful. This Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m., you can get sanctified at Deck 84 (840 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach) in the presence of more than 30 current and former NFL and college players at the inaugural Prep & Sports Charity Super Bowl Party. The party benefits Prep & Sports, a Delray nonprofit that helps at-risk kids with academics and recreation. Among the football players will be the Kansas City Chiefs Brandon Flowers and the Detroit Lions Randy Phillips, both SoFla natives.
