Some say America is a Christian nation, and maybe it is, but others say that this great country’s true religion is football. Not baseball — with its brown-eyed handsome men on clean grass — but football, the sport in which mean-eyed ugly men collide on the muddy gridiron. Spit flies, bones crunch, and the bowels are rocked as our helmeted warrior priests deliver divine transcendence through physical combat. True believers look on from the couch, keeping the faith over bowls of cheese puffs and cans of cheap beer.

The Super Bowl, of course, is Christmas for America’s football faithful. This Sunday from 5 to 11 p.m., you can get sanctified at Deck 84 (840 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach) in the presence of more than 30 current and former NFL and college players at the inaugural “Prep & Sports Charity Super Bowl Party.” The party benefits Prep & Sports, a Delray nonprofit that helps at-risk kids with academics and recreation. Among the football players will be the Kansas City Chiefs’ Brandon Flowers and the Detroit Lions’ Randy Phillips, both SoFla natives.

Tickets cost $50 in advance or $75 at the door. Live music, a free buffet, and drink discounts are included. A fee of $150 gets you in the VIP room, where the sauce is free. Zumba-dancing girls will be on hand to pass out prizes too. Call 877-515-9595, or visit charitysuperbowlparty.org. Amen, pigskin.
