Eat With Your Eyes
Ever since James Beard appeared in the first network cooking show, I Love To Eat, in the late 1940s, people have been obsessed with filming their food. Today, we even have terminology to describe the way the camera languishes over our succulent eats, tightening into Extreme Close-Up Mode for each elongated bite: food porn. Yes, the two mediums are almost inseparable, which explains why the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Entres Nous, and the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale have all teamed up to bring us The Fine Art of Film, Fashion, and Food, a luxurious evening that combines all three titular ingredients into one savory dish.
The stars of the show will be the students from the Art Institute's culinary, fashion design, and video production programs, who will each present a course of their own. The culinary team will offer a spread of artfully prepared hors d'oeuvres in addition to main courses of potato gnocchi with rosemary chicken and wild mushrooms, roasted Greek lamb with tzatziki, and vegetable curry; the Museum bar will offer wine, martinis, and Manhattans to go with. Meanwhile, video production students will be screening their collective efforts, including short films, documentaries, and music videos, while budding fashionistas strut their artwork-themed creations along the runway. Comers will also get an exclusive opportunity to tour the Museum of Art privately, and bid on artwork in a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit FLIFF, so the festival can continue to do its thang: bringing tasty films to the FTL.
Whet your appetite at 1 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The affair (including 2 drinks) runs $60 per person, or $100 per couple. Call 954-760-9898, or visit fliff.com.
