Express Yourself; Save Someone Else
We crack a lot of wise here at New Times, but some topics are off-limits. Suicide rates have been rising in South Florida, and something needs to be done about it. The Florida Initiative for Suicide Prevention (FISP) has a number of projects in place to help people feel like a part of something bigger than themselves, but one event in particular is bringing communities together while shining a light on creativity. "Not Alone! The Expressions of Hope Project" has been an ongoing collaboration featuring real people and real stories -- a collection of stories that needs and deserves to be told.Months of work are culminating into live performances (and a future documentary). These multimedia theater presentations will include everything from songs to videos to spoken word. The idea is using art as a form of expression and building a safe place in the process. The live performance at the Pride Center will not only bring people together but also instill a sense of worth in everyone involved, an essential byproduct of the mission at hand. Not Alone! presented by FISP will be live at the Pride Center (2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors) at 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free, and you are encouraged to invite others.
