Fishing is not a pastime one often associates with being extreme. Do not, however, mention that sentiment to the 100 competitors of the third-annual Extreme Kayak/Paddle Board Fishing Tournament. On Saturday, these brave souls will paddle offshore in search of as many dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, and black and yellowfin tuna as they can hook. This is no easy feat considering they will be dealing with Mother Nature's conditions and balancing on said kayaks and paddleboards -- all the while trying to snag a 20-pound Almaco Jack from the ocean. A true test of steadiness and stability, we say.
There are some fantastic prizes up for grabs. First place takes home $2,000 in cash, second and third win Hobie kayaks from Nautical Ventures, and fourth place wins an Ascend kayak from Bass Pro Shops. The contestants shoot out at 6 a.m. and must be back on the beach at 2 p.m. for the weigh-in. Tournament proceeds benefit the Palm Beach Reef Rescue Organization.
All this takes place at the Pompano Beach Municipal Pier, located at 222 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. in Pompano Beach. The entry fee for competitors is $85. Register online at extremekayakfishing.com, or call 954-895-4527.
