Fit as a Fiddle
The U.S. isn’t exactly known as a nation of the physically fit. More than one-third of the population is obese. Heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and certain kinds of cancers, all of which are related to being overweight, are some of the leading causes of preventable death. With those numbers, we certainly are not a nation of supermodels. However, in case you haven’t noticed all the vegan, gluten-free, Mediterranean, or cavemen-grass-eater diet trends, fixation with health is on the rise — a good thing for our medical expenses and our eyes. To counteract all the fatty burgers, hot dogs, deep-fried Twinkies, and whatever other fat-fueled foods festivals frequently offer, this time the health-conscious are getting their day. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the first Fort Lauderdale Health Food Expo is coming to town. In conjunction with the Live Like Bella Foundation for Childhood Cancer, the festival features live demos, contests, entertainment, and tons of nourishing food and beverage tastings, right in downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Huizenga Park. Participating restaurants include Green Bar & Kitchen, Myapapaya Juicery & Kitchen, Organic Brewery, and the Royal Pig Pub & Kitchen.
