Flicks for Chicks
What's a modern-day, young feminist to do? With stalwart originators of the modern women's movement beginning to gradually exit stage left and an almost undying stereotype of feminists as bitter and/or ugly and/or lesbian and/or asexual man-haters, how can young women today move forward the cause of women? Perhaps by reinventing the public image of what is female and setting forth a new more modern archetype. The Girls' Club (117 NE Second St., Fort Lauderdale) is helping to inspire this process with a film series call Chick Flicks. Run in conjunction with a photography exhibition called "Re-Framing the Feminine," the film series features challenging and unexpected depictions of women. This week's flick, Office Killer, starring Molly Ringwald and Jeanne Tripplehorn, shows a woman who is pushed to the edge of quiet desperation and ultimately finds solace in murdering her coworkers. Someone's got a case of the Mondays! Also being screened is Scenic Jogging, a video by local artist Jillian Mayer. The event is free. Visit girlsclubcollection.org, or call 954-828-9151.
