OK, the holidays are over and you’ve already strayed from those “resolutions” you swore you’d stick to this time. Whatever; here’s a little eye-opener from the Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth (FLIPANY) website to get you focused: “Two-thirds of adults and almost one-third of children in the United States are overweight or obese. This epidemic of excess weight is associated with major causes of chronic disease, disability, and death.” That sounds awesome, right? No! FLIPANY was established by 15-year nutrition teacher veteran Lynne Kunins in 2005 and has worked with youth and their families to empower them through “physical activity and nutrition education programs while raising awareness and creating policies for a healthier community.” A fun way of shedding those holiday pounds and maybe creating a new resolution you can commit to is joining one of the group’s runs. On Saturday, FLIPANY will host 5K and 10K Fun Runs at Hollywood’s North Beach Park (3601 N. Ocean Drive). Registration begins at 6 a.m., and pre-event registration fees are $15 for children, $25 adults age 18 and up, $20 for Running Clubs and teams with ten or more participants, or $30 the day of the race. There will be kids’ activities, a silent auction/raffle, and a fruit and bagel breakfast as well as access to local health and wellness vendors. The starting line will be on the corner of Sheridan Street and A1A; parking is free until 8 a.m. Call 954-636-2388, or visit flipany.org.
