Show of hands -- How many of you can name the last African American lesbian feature film you saw at the Muvico? Anyone?

It's a sad state of cinema when predictable "dick flicks" like You Don't Mess With the Zohan rake in big bucks while smart, engaging films on race, class and gender are reserved for strident media studies discussions. But alternatives do exist. Take Cheryl Dunye's 1996 classic the Watermelon Woman. In it, Dunye's character is making a documentary about an obscure black actress of the 1930s who only gets recognized in film credits as "the watermelon woman." Touching on oft-taboo topics from the mammy archetype to lesbian love, Dunye is known as the lesbian Spike Lee.

Tonight, during "Out Girls Movie Night" at Stonewall, sit in on a series of shorts exploring young, black lesbian life during The Early Works of Cheryl Dunye. Showtime starts at 7 p.m. at 1300 E. Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-763-8565, or visit
