Face it, theres no way to get back the brain cells you lost watching Bubble Boy, the 2001 comedic bust starring a pre-Brokeback Mountain Jake Gyllenhaal. However, while your soul is forever tainted, you can make good with your brain at the 2006 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival at Cinema Paradiso (503 NE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Among the festivals 12 competing films is Barak Goodmans and John Maggios The Boy in the Bubble, a glimpse into the hermetically sealed life of a young lad with an immune system disorder. Granted, the terms documentary and depressing dont always go hand in hand, as the rest of the festivals schedule makes clear.
Thursday kicks things off with The Immigrant (an exploration into the Mexican-American border crisis that would make even Lou Dobbs shed a tear) and Rain in a Dry Land (an 18-month journey by two Somali Bantu refugee families through the United States). Fridays films include Asparagus! Stalking the American Life (Oceana, Michigan's struggle to keep its roots in the global economy) and Sacco and Vanzetti (the Italian-American radicals executed -- unfairly, many say -- in 1927). On Saturday, the lineup is Songbirds (about female jailbirds who learn to sing); Sweet Dreams (a challenge to stereotypes of Italian-American men); China Blue (a look at globalization through the eyes of a teenage factory worker in China); Filthy Gorgeous, The Trannyshack Story (a rock ´n roll drag show); and The Boy in the Bubble (again, not the Gyllenhaal flick). Sunday wraps things up with Saz (about Palestinian rapper Samekh Zakhut), The Refugee All Stars (an Afro-pop group of Sierra Leone refugees); and Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in On Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture (um, what the title says). In addition, VH1's The Drug Years is shown at 2 p.m. Sunday. Call 954-525-FILM, or visit www.cinemaparadiso.org.
