America has long had a love/hate relationship with the French. They helped us out with that whole Revolutionary War thing and gave us that pretty lady statue that stands out in the middle of New York Harbor. On the other hand, we mock them as being snotty, smelly socialists who drink and smoke too much. Still, French culture holds an almost irresistible allure for us, and there is no better way to explore that allure than through the cinema. Florida Atlantic University (777 Glades Road, Boca Raton) is hosting a French Film Festival with movies every Wednesday through April 11. Today at 5:30 p.m., catch a screening and discussion of the film “Un Prophete” (“A Prophet”), which follows a 19-year-old French-Arab, Malik, as he enters prison and is faced with a world of corruption and racism. Each of the films will be followed by a discussion and debate of issues such as feminism, homosexuality, religion, and racism.
