Yoga can make your body -- and if you're lucky, your mind -- all nice and bendy. Unfortunately, attending classes at some fancy-ass studio can squeeze your budget long before you've mastered the downward-facing dog. Tonight's hatha yoga class at Sunview Park in Fort Lauderdale is priced for the common man. Instructor Melinda Matthews earned her 200-hour yoga teacher certification in 2011 and also participates in Yoga Gangsters, a yoga outreach program that brings yoga to at-risk kids. She suggests students tonight bring a mat, towel, and water to class. And of course, wear comfortable clothes that allow free movement. The weekly drop-in classes, offered by the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division, are a recent addition to the park's schedule.
The session is 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will be held in the park's modular building. The cost is normally $10 per class, but this week's fee is waived as part of a "grand opening" mini-celebration. Matthews also will offer light refreshments after tonight's session. Sunview Park is located at 1500 SW 42 Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-791-1040, or visit broward.org/parks.
Wednesdays, 7-8:30 p.m. Starts: Aug. 15. Continues through Aug. 14, 2012
