While in the studio recording their debut album, A.K.A.’s Lori Garrote and Natalie Martinez realized it was time for a name change. And after having learned a thing or three under the tutelage of award-winning engineer/producer John D. Thomas, the girls decided on a name that reflects their new direction — the New. So what does this young Miami group sound like? Well, as the name suggests, there’s a definite sense of modern rock. But anyone familiar with the golden age of power-pop (the late ’70s/early ’80s) will be pleasantly surprised. Not only are the tunes catchy as all hell but the guitar is front and center and not overproduced, as in much of today’s so-called “power-pop.” This is definitely a band to watch.

The New shares the stage with Zombies! Organize!! at 10 p.m. Saturday at Dada Restaurant and Lounge (52 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach). The show is free. Call 561-330-3232, or visit dadaofdelray.com.
