The plight of sufferers of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, grabbed national headlines last month when the Ice Bucket Challenge started popping up on everyone's Facebook news feeds, and rightfully so, but there are many more incurable diseases that deserve as much attention. One of them is spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the leading genetic cause of death in children under age 2. This Thursday, philanthropists will have their chance to contribute to this worthwhile cause at the fourth-annual Gala of Hope to Cure Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Held at Ferrari-Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, all proceeds raised from this fabulous gala will benefit local nonprofit organization the Families of SMA. A charitable good time, featuring a six-piece band, Stoli Doli Martinis compliments of the Capital Grille, cocktails from Heaven Hill Distillery and Premium Beverage, and a raffle for the chance to win a $5,000 shopping spree at JR Dunn Jewelers, there will be tons of swag to make all the benevolent attendees happy. This year's Gala of Hope takes place Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ferrari-Maserati of Fort Lauderdale, located at 5750 N. Federal Highway. Tickets cost $150 per person. Visit fsma.org/GalaOfHope, or call 954-696-6001.
