Give the iPhone an Afternoon Off
In our smartphone-dependent culture, awareness often means remembering to check in on Foursquare (hey, that Starbucks mayorship isn’t going to maintain itself, you know). This Sunday’s Peace in the Park — Festival of Spirit makes the plea for taking a few hours to detach from negative vibes — and electronic devices — and enjoy the here and now. Volunteers from the Brahma Kumaris have organized the event, which invites members of the community to relax and mingle with one another in the promotion of peace and well-being. The afternoon’s events include live performances by “Reggae Ambassador” Willie Stewart with local youth representing Rhythms of Africa, 10-year-old vocalist Julia Dale, jazz harpist Stacey Berkley, and acoustic musicians Betan and Berner. Artist Huong will exhibit her peace mural, and Wanda Myles of WLRN-FM (91.3) will emcee. Interactive programs include meditation samplers, tai chi, kids’ activities, a laughter circle, and “tent talks.” The festival is 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday in ArtsPark, located at 1 Young Circle in downtown Hollywood. There is no cost to attend. Call 305-442-2252, or visit peaceintheparkflorida.org.
