Gourds of Wisdom
Puppeteer Akbar Imhotep's motto of "have stories, will travel" fits nicely with his love of traditional African storytelling. Imhotep's puppetry skills and tales of wisdom have been delighting children in his hometown of Atlanta, and now he brings his talents to South Florida for the second year in a row. His stories range from African and African-American folktales to Uncle Remus tales, and he even does a combination of both called "Remus Omowale." This visit, his menagerie of puppets performs as a variety of worldly characters as he unfolds an enchanting and virtuous story in the Golden Gourd and Other Tales. The show begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Puppetry Arts Center, 1200 S. Congress Ave., West Palm Beach. Weekday shows require reservations; admission is $4. Call 561-967-3231. -- Audra Schroeder

The tale of the ugly duckling gets a comical makeover in this Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre production. Our homely little star is goin' quackers trying to fit in with the group. SAT 5/10 Take Five
Digital fun for the whole gang
Kids, are you struggling to find a way to talk to Mom and Dad, besides boring dinner-table conversation? And parents, are you exhausting yourselves trying to relate to your children, what with their rock music and ripped jeans? Well, our friend Kenny 5 has taken it upon himself to host a computer editing workshop for the family called Lights, Camera, Computer, Action! Mr. 5 is best-known for his creation of the "electric surfboard" (it plays music), but he's taking time out from toiling away in his lab to help participants create short videos using a digital video camera and a computer editing program. The fruits of your labor will then be shown at Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art's outdoor film night on May 16. Workshop starts at 1 p.m. at Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, 601 Lake Ave., Lake Worth. Call 561-582-0006. -- Audra Schroeder
