What's life without a horse and pony show?! Not the negative kind that you constantly find yourself being drawn into -- an actual Heritage Horse Show at Plantation Equestrian Center on Saturday. The day, dubbed Ride for the Animals, not only promises to be filled with exciting horse-jumping competitions but also helps raise money for homeless pets at the Humane Society of Broward County. The third-annual fundraiser, sponsored by Finish Line Feed, will have a special mobile adoption unit for people interested in owning a fur-ever friend. Finish Line Feed is a store in Dania Beach that serves our South Florida equestrian community with horse feed and supplies and has been hosting competitions for 11 years with monthly events.
Organizers hope to raise $10,000 with this year's event. Don't forget to bring your own furry friends for dog contests, such as dog and owner look-alike, silly dog tricks, and doggy costume contests. There will also be cash prizes for competitions, such as Sit a Buck, Walk Trot, and everyone's favorite, Crazy Calcutta, a timed obstacle course. Participate in Spectator Sports at 3 p.m. with three-legged races, water balloon tosses, and the hula challenge. Raffle prizes will be given away, and you can count on all-you-can-eat BBQ being available from 3 to 6 p.m. The Ride for the Animals event is from 1 to 6 p.m., and it's free and open to all ages. The Plantation Acres Equestrian Center is located at 1451 NW 118th Ave. in Sunrise. Dog contests and spectator sports cost $5 each to participate in, and the BBQ is $7 per person. If you would like to get involved or volunteer, call Jennifer Kennedy at 954-328-1669 or Mona Straub at 954-205-3657.
