Sure, you can hold your own at the gym. You scoff at lesser athletes as you jog past them on the beach, kicking up sand. But can you flip a tractor tire? Can you push a small truck? If the answer is no, then you’re simply not cut out for the Ultimate Athlete Competition at Quiet Waters Park (401 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach).

It’s an unconventional athletic mash-up. Both male and female competitors tackle a two-mile run, an off-road bike race, a truck push, a tire flip, a log lift, a shuttle run, a low hurdle, and a farmer’s carry, which mimics a farmer carrying buckets of feed, contestants will race with dumbbells in each hand. For the uninitiated, these events could sound daunting — after all, how often do you train by flipping tractor tires across the driveway? Eddie Garczyk, Quiet Waters Park’s Recreation Coordinator, sheds a bit of insider know-how to conquering this intimidating task. “You gotta get a good rhythm on [the tire], then you’re good,” he explains. “If it starts jumpin’ around and rollin’ on you, that’s when you get into trouble.” In summary: rhythm equals good; being crushed by an oversized tire equals bad. Potential Iron Men and Iron Women should sign up by calling 954-360-1315. Registration is $35 for individuals and $50 for couples.
