Improv For A Cause
Some causes are worth celebrating for an entire month. June is Pride Month, a 30-day-long chance to raise awareness for LGBTQ rights. The bevy of events on the calendar to celebrate prove there are more ways to recognize Pride Month than marching in a parade. One group in particular is brimming with pride in a totally new and exciting way it wants to share with a live audience. The Pride Pups is an improv troupe specifically built to support the LGBTQ community. Born out of Boca Raton's purveyors of funny the Sick Puppies, the Pride Pups come ready with improv street cred and the perfect twist to make a difference.
The Pride Pups' show Gay Prov is specifically designed to openly address issues within the gay community. It's a new idea, since rarely is comedy used as a vehicle to raise awareness, let alone improv. Making up comedy on the spot is no easy task, but the Pride Pups have a mission at hand and are ready to tackle whatever the audience throws at them. Along the train of funny, the Pride Pups are raising money for Sun Serve, a Wilton Manors-based LGBTQ social services organization. It's one part comedy, one part pride, and one part audience. The crowd is what can take an improv show from funny to gut-busting hilarious. But this show also happens to be important.
Gay Prov by the Pride Pups is Sunday from 8:30 to 10 p.m. at the Empire Stage, located at 1140 N. Flagler Drive. Tickets cost $25, and advance purchase is required. Complimentary wine and beer will be provided. Theater donations are encouraged. Visit sickpuppiescomedy.com, or call 954-667-7735.
