In Cold Sweat
It started out as a pleasant Sunday days off are a luxury to be treasured when you own and promote your own record store. Lauren Reskin, owner of Miami staple Sweat Records, knew this, so she absorbed every last drop of joy from the breezy, laid back morning. The days tone changed dramatically when she swung by her business for a quick meeting, what she saw could never have been predicted. The door swung open with only a gentle touch, and inside were the scattered remnants of three years of labor. The prized coral and fish habitat was shattered on the ground; the water sopped up by a confetti of paperwork, documents, overturned CD and record bins. As her view expanded, she saw the panoramic scene in its entirety: Vandals had stolen the computer, cash, artwork, video projector, and even the used CD bin. I might have started hyperventilating a little bit, recalls Reskin, then I got on the phone. The police came soon after and took fingerprints. Reskin put out the bat signal: an army of volunteers emerged to help clean up.
Sweat was set back roughly 15 grand by the tragedy. Since theyve never given up before, though, you can be sure that Reskin and crew wont be stopped by this set back either. Local musicians Jesse Jackson and Animals of the Arctic jumped into the relief efforts. They put together tonights mega fundraiser show at Churchills (5501 NE Second Ave., Miami), and since love is infectious, soon more bands than could fit on the bill were volunteering their services. Heres the line-up as of presstime: Jesse Jackson, Animals of the Arctic, Raffa & Rainer, The Down Home Southernaires, Rachel Goodrich, Dino Filipe, The Electric Bunnies, Little Beard, and Tee Pee. The ten dollar cover goes to keepin Miami all good and Sweaty, so go and bring a posse. Doors at 8:30 p.m. Visit, or make a donation at www.sweatrecordsmiami.blogspot.com.
