Lauderdale Knows How to Kick It
There is always something to be excited about, furious over, and bored by in the world of South Florida pro sports. Currently, Miami has claimed the Marlins for itself and given them a crazy, sexy makeover; the superbad Heat are serving up stanky plates of whoop-ass to (almost) everyone who enters their house; and the actually-bad Dolphins are serving up an even stankier all-you-can-eat poo buffet to whatever “Phans” are still paying attention. The Panthers (remember them?) have been schooling teams that come from places where ice occurs naturally and have earned themselves a spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile in Broward County, the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (ever heard of them?) are off to a great start for the 2012 season. South Florida’s North American Soccer League team went 7-0-2 in the preseason and won their regular-season opener against FC Edmonton. Tonight, the team returns to Lockhart Stadium (5201 NW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale) to face the Puerto Rico Islanders at 7:30. In addition to playing very well so far, the Strikers are sporting new uniforms this year, and food trucks are now an established part of the Lockhart tailgating scene. “Miami has the Dolphins...,” and that’s fine. Go Strikers! Tickets cost $10 to $32. Call 954-606-0400, or visit strikers.com.
