Laugh For Kids, Not At Them

By taking to heart Franklin Roosevelt's quote of educating the youth for the future, the GBDC Entrepreneurship Institute has worked with about 40 teenagers each summer to develop social entrepreneurs through training, business coaching, and technical assistance. Annette Gray, the institute's founder said in a recent news release that "the high school dropout rate is no laughing matter. We teach our young entrepreneurs that they can create their own job." The institute's overall goal is to reduce dropout rates and increase the employability of South Florida's youth. Part of the program is re-creating a working environment in which the kids receive a stipend while they work, a program supported through grants and donations. Now, the institute is planning its first fundraiser, and it has enlisted the aid of veteran comedian, warm-up comic, and booker for the Late Show With Dave Letterman show Eddie Brill as headliner for an "Apollo-styled" comedy gala that will be hosted by Tree Top. Locals A.Z. and Faro Kane will join Tie-Bo for a full evening's worth of laughs that will warm up the log and brandish the Sandman's cane at the new Wick Theatre and Costume Museum in Boca.
