Once known strictly as an antiques destination and a French Canadian tourist mecca, Hollywood has been slowly reinventing itself as a culturally relevant urban art core. Due in large part to Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s funded Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, the charming, sleepy town now boasts vibrant public art on many of its downtown walls. Featuring work from some of the tricounty area’s most-renowned artists (from the likes of Lebo, the TM Sisters, and Ruben Ubiera), these murals have breathed new life into a city that seemed stuck in the ’50s. This Saturday, Hollywood welcomes internationally acclaimed street artists the London Police, who have been commissioned to make an addition to Hollywood’s already impressive collection of murals. The English duo of Bob Gibson and Chaz Barrison are only the second artists from overseas invited to participate in the street art project, and the public is invited to witness their “Live Painting Performance” at the west-facing wall at 1909 Harrison St. — where the two will be spreading their smiley-face style, purportedly tied to a nautical theme (given Hollywood’s proximity to the ocean). The London Police Live Painting Performance takes place Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at 1909 Harrison St. in Hollywood. Free. Call 954-924-2980, or visit facebook.com/DowntownHollywoodMuralProject.
