For at least 10 years, Garo Gallo, along with girlfriend and business partner Yvonne Colon, has worked zealously to keep the fabric of Fort Lauderdales music community from unraveling. At their old warehouse, at the the recently-opened artist/music space the Bubble, and during their monthly event Florida? Yeah!, theyve been bringing together South Florida bands of yore, as well as giving new bands opportunities to be heard.
Augusts Florida? Yeah! will feature singer-songwriter Alex Nelson and Gallos band Dooms de Pop. Nelson crafts lo-fi acoustic numbers infused with keyboards and topped with emotional and sincere lyricism. Dooms de Pop is the opposite. Noisy but not sloppy, Dooms de Pop mixes heavy, crunchy guitar-playing with aggressive drumming for a prog-rock delivery that has an added shot of punk adrenaline.
Florida? Yeah!, held the last Saturday of every month, kicks off at 11 p.m. at Fort Lauderdales favorite dive bar, The Poor House (110 SW 3 Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Tongues of the Heartworm will also perform. Admission is free. Call 954-522-5145.
Sat., Aug. 29, 11 p.m., 2009
