Make Love, Not Warhammer

What is Comicstock? Well, imagine a certain infamous music festival, only at Comicstock, you don’t need to drop acid to see people dressed up as Astro Boy and Batman dancing to classic rock. Actually, you’ll find that and much more at the first “peace, love, and comics festival,” going down Saturday and Sunday at Florida Super Comics (5917 S. University Drive, Davie).

Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, the massive comic emporium full of anime, games, trade paperbacks, and collectors toys will transform into a retro-themed comic-book party. There will be a host of artists in attendance like Derec Aucoin Donovan (who has worked on Superman and Spiderman, to name a few) and Vinnie Tartamella (cover artist for drawing such politically charged comics as Freedom Force’s Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton). Expect a breakout wrestling match Saturday at 3 p.m., when the likes of Cobra Commander and the Green Lantern will duke it out for a (not-so-)peace-loving crowd. Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers can come dressed as their favorite 1960s action hero, comic book character, or even political figure, and a costume contest will reward their deliciously nerdy efforts with more than $1,000 in prizes. All the while, just about everything in the store will be 20 percent off, and fans can pick up back issues and long boxes full of comics for even less.

It’s all brought to you by the folks behind the Florida Supercon — so when they say “cat girl costume party,” you know they mean business. The event is entirely free and runs until 9 p.m. Sunday. Visit
