Me, Myself, and You
As people spend less and less on entertainment, more of our artistic establishments are closing. Compound this with the arts communitys perennial struggle to eke out a bit of funding from the states budget, and you see that a city is truly only as healthy as its creative base. And who better to help you understand the importance of artists than you guessed it the artists themselves? Bear and Bird Gallerys latest group show Me Me Me Me Me, part of a series of biannual exhibits open to local participants, will showcase self-portraits from over 150 local artists. Art often communicates ideas that are beyond words, transcends cultural and language barriers, and exposes us to the diversity and constants of human experience. The group shows past themes, such as politics and skulls, provided opportunities to go heavy on such abstraction. Gazing upon 150 self-portraits, however, may prove much more intimate. Self-portraits may still be conceptual, but attendees will be looking at the artists behind the work (or at least what the artist wants them to see). This sort of intimacy may be a crucial step in appreciating our oft-overlooked local arts community.
The opening reception begins 7 p.m. Saturday at Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery, located at 4566 N. University Dr. in Lauderhill above Tate's Comics. The exhibit will be on display through May 30. Visit bearandbird.com, or call 954-748-0181.
