Midnight in Coral Springs
A little bit of fin-de-siècle Paris will come to Coral Springs on Thursday when the Coral Springs Museum of Art presents "Toulouse-Lautrec and His 19th Century Mentors." A vibrant artistic era just before the turn of the 20th Century, fin-de-siècle Paris buzzed with counterculture, radical ideas, and the talented observers who sought out its decadence. Paris, or more precisely the area known as Montmartre, wasn't necessarily the happiest place, just an exciting one, especially for creative types.
And French painter/lithographer Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was in the thick of it. Here, he met and befriended Van Gogh, painted prostitutes, sketched the often-depressing nightlife spectacle, and drank himself to death by 36. But not before leaving a sizable oeuvre that took cues from impressionist contemporaries Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas, who will also be included in the show. Much of Toulouse-Lautrec's income came from his colorful advertisements, with their dark silhouettes and strong contours (think Moulin Rouge); these advertisements remain a favorite accessory among dorm-room walls.
In addition to Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, and Degas, the show will feature original lithographs, etchings, pen-and-ink drawings, and pencil drawings by Alphonse Mucha, James Whistler, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Mary Cassatt, among others. The opening reception starts at 6:30 and costs $10. Regular admission to the museum costs $5, except Wednesdays, when it's free. Coral Springs Museum of Art is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs. Call 954-340-5000, or visit csmart.org.
Thu., Nov. 17, 6:30 p.m.; Mondays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 17. Continues through March 10, 2011
