More Culture Than Yogurt
Hispanic heritage isn't exactly something you can put into a bottle or squeeze into a month, but damned if they won't try. An onslaught of willy-nilly holidays hitting us in the face constantly by way of social media posts that no one gives a crap about have introduced millions to the likes of National Grilled Cheese Day and Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. But what about the holidays that really mean something? The ones that cause you to take a step back and appreciate your culture or think about others around the world? News flash: They still exist. To prove that point, Broward College's Willis Holcombe Center is taking Hispanic Heritage Month seriously. Events will be happening all month to recognize this cultural movement, but one such fiesta takes the cake over the others. The Hispanic Heritage Festival on Wednesday will have a little something for everyone, whether you know nothing or are a Hispanic Studies major. Live music from Miami-based six-piece band Xperimento will play in the background while attendees sink their teeth into all things fun, festive, and Hispanic and even some real, authentic food available to purchase from the Cuban Press food truck. I'm sorry, did you say live music and a food truck on campus? Meet me in the quad, stat. The Hispanic Heritage Festival is Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Broward College's Willis Holcombe Center (225 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale). Admission is free.
