Mr. Joan Crawford
After the death of legendary actress Joan Crawford, her daughter published a book that has gone down as one of the most unflattering tell-alls in history. Cristina Crawford alleged that her mother was an alcoholic, ruthlessly careerist and abusive, capable of attempted strangling, and prone to raging out when finding her clothes on ordinary wire hangers. She was also allegedly a bisexual sex fiend. The veracity of the daughter's account, Mommie Dearest, is disputed to this day. Now, on the 30th anniversary of the cult film adaptation starring Faye Dunaway, the sordid tale is getting a new treatment.
Mommie Queerest is an LA Weekly award-winning play that envisions Joan Crawford as a secret transsexual, a fact her daughter is trying to flash to the world. It's coming through South Florida on a national tour. A male actor with a striking resemblance to the already mannish-looking Crawford will star alongside three other men at the cozy, crazy Empire Stage (1140 N. Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale). The play premieres at 8 p.m. Thursday and runs through August 28. Tickets cost $25. Free wine. Call 954 678-1496, or visit empirestage.com.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 11. Continues through Aug. 28, 2011
