It's not a national holiday yet, but it should be: Free Comic Book Day is upon us once again, hitting comic book dens nationwide on Saturday. Though the spread of free comic books has no religious or nationalistic ties - it's simply a chance for publishers to hook in some new fans while celebrating the old - you could say that the Gods would certainly approve.
For the seventh year in a row now, freebies will be in no short supply at local, independent comic retailers. Among the handouts is Green Lantern: Blackest Night #0, the prequel installment in a new DC story arch by Infinite Crisis author Geoff Johns. Fans of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle series will be pleased to know that Mirage is offering up a 25th anniversary reprint of TMNT #1 - for those who haven't read it, the OG comic series was mature, graphic, and wicked, unlike the children's TV show that popularized the foursome. There'll also be a special edition Aliens vs. Predator, Sonic the Hedgehog, and, of course, Bongo Free-For-All. All of these books are just some of the over three dozen offerings available at comic shops all across South Florida, so check out freecomicday.com for more info.

You can also stop into Tate's Comics on Saturday for a free signing by local artist, Vinnie Tartamella, who will be supporting his latest work, Female Force: Michelle Obama. A gifted illustrator, Tartamella drew the lifelike cover, which features our new First Lady in all her stunning glory. The 501st Stormtrooper Legion will also be in attendance, so watch where you step, lest you get blasted. Find Tate's at 4566 N. University Dr. in Lauderhill.
