Music and Lyrics
Sure, eight Tony Awards may be impressive to some but just music composer Duncan Sheik is reason enough to catch a showing of the musical Spring Awakening. Formerly known as a one-hit wonder (ahem, Barely Breathing), Sheik is the man behind the riveting music and lyrics that charge the pop-rock adaptation of Frank Wedekinds controversial 1891 play of teen self-discovery. Although set in the 1800s, the performance is modernized with a full rock band and forward-thinking characters that will make you want to fist-pump, cry, and kick your neighbors seat.
Running through May 16, the traveling Broadway show debuts at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). Before you consider inviting your High School Musical-loving niece, though, let us warn you that this musical is light on the Zac Efron and heavy on the sex, suicide, and rock n roll. Tickets cost $25 to $75. Call 305-949-6722, or visit arshtcenter.org.
Tue., May 11, 8 p.m.; Wednesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Sat., May 15, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sun., May 16, 2 & 7:30 p.m. Starts: May 11. Continues through May 16, 2010
