Naked Belly Laughs
This isn't your classic Broadway play with hours of theatrical singing or enormous animal costumes (no offense to The Lion King; you're great). In fact, at times the characters won't be wearing anything in this play -- after all, it is about porn.
Australian playwright Ronnie Larsen's comedy Making Porn follows the lives of six people filming gay porn in San Francisco in the 1980s. The show has toured throughout the U.S. over the past 19 years, with more than 500 performances off-Broadway in New York City. And you can see most of the original cast members perform it at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale.
This play's scandalous story lines have more drama than a marathon of Real Housewives of Miami and plenty of what South Florida Gay News calls "outrageously funny sex scenes that play on every stereotype in the porn world." Just to give you an idea, one of the characters freaks out when she finds out her straight actor husband takes a role in an upcoming gay porn movie. Then the producer's boyfriend/assistant falls in love with one of the actors -- and that's not even half of it.
Making Porn runs through March 16 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 5 p.m. at Empire Stage Theatre, 1140 N. Flagler Drive, Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $30. Visit empirestage.com, or call 954-678-1496.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 5 p.m. Starts: Feb. 13. Continues through March 16, 2014
