Round two for Shaq and Kobe
It's an NBA tale of two cities. For Shaq in Miami, it's the best of times. The team is comfortably ahead in the Eastern Conference standings -- guaranteed a number-one seed for the playoffs barring some unforeseen collapse, and the Diesel is at the top of everyone's short list for MVP candidates. As for Kobe in Los Angeles, it's the worst of times. The Lakers are fighting for their playoff lives with the likes of Minnesota and Denver in the race for the eighth seed; newcomers Caron Butler and Lamar Odom have griped about too few touches; and Mr. Bryant has been hampered all season by injuries and legal issues. Oh, and then there was the Christmas Day get-together. Shaq torched his former team for 24 points and 11 boards en route to a thrilling 104-102 OT victory at Staples in front of a national audience. For those scoring this roundball divorce, round one clearly goes to the Big Fella. All of this makes for a scintillating round two, which goes down tonight at American Airlines Arena (601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). Tip-off for this must-see bout between the Lakers and Heat is at 8 p.m. Once again, the entire country will be watching, with TNT broadcasting the game nationally. Tickets range from $10 to $220. The ultimate in Ultimate
To see the most badass athletes this side of the Jell-O wrestling pool on Fort Lauderdale Beach, check out the Battle on the Beach Ultimate Frisbee tournament. Those sweaty people running around in sand socks who seem to be trying to decapitate one another with Frisbees? They're just playing Ultimate -- a combo of soccer, football, and basketball in which players pass to one another, trying to get the Frisbee across the goal line. Don't show up expecting to join a pickup game -- these kids put the hard in hardcore, and they've paid $250 to field a team on Saturday and Sunday. You are, however, welcome to watch the action on Riviera Beach (Blue Heron Boulevard and A1A, Riviera Beach). Call 561-626-6735, or visit www.beachultimate.com. If you're looking to play, check out www.pompeiischildren.org. -- Deirdra Funcheon
