On the Boulevard
A lot of people think there are only two seasons in South Florida: hurricane season and not hurricane season. But we're actually much more nuanced around here, thank you very much. For instance, we have one season that spans what the rest of the country would call winter and spring: festival season! During these cooler months, you can barely walk down a South Florida street without tripping over a fair or a festival of some kind. From greenmarkets to pet fairs to indie crafts fests, there's an outdoor event to suit every ambling browser's fancy. This weekend, one of the biggest street events around, the Las Olas Art Fair, returns to downtown Fort Lauderdale. Sure, it's not Basel, but who needs the traffic and pretension anyway? This is a fair in the South Florida tradition. It has a calm, lazy, SoFla vibe. Stroll the boulevard while admiring paintings, statues, jewelry, and crafts made by more than 250 artists from 30 states. The Las Olas Art Fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday along Las Olas Boulevard, between SE Sixth Avenue and SE 11th Avenue. Admission is free, and a portion of all proceeds from the festival benefits the Las Olas Association.
Sat., Jan. 4, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun., Jan. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., 2014
