Out, Out, Young Sprout
Theres no denying it: Most Westerners have, at some point, snuck a glance at Davids twig-and-berries. The statue by Michelangelo is famous for many reasons, but mostly Davids uncircumcised phallus and delicate balls are focal points. The Catholic Church understood the allure of naked statues -- thats why, during the heyday of European sculpturing, it went about veiling or castrating any it could find. Museums like the Vatican are filled with those disfigured statues, which, in turn, sort of make you wonder what happened to all the severed dicks.
On a distantly related note, an exhibition of sculptures by five artists entitled Put You on a Pedestal opens Saturday night at the Dorsch Gallery (151 NW 24th Street, Miami). There wont be any nudes, but among the works is a beautiful wood rendering of an electric mixer, which invites the utterance, Ce nest pas un kitchen appliance. Also on display: Impossibly complex pop-up books by local artist Andrew Binder and steel sculptures by Dominique Labauvie. Admission is free. Theres an opening reception from 7 to 10 p.m.; the exhibition ends on February 2 with a closing reception. Call 305-576-1278, or visit www.dorschgallery.com.
