FAU football undefeated

SAT 10/23

Howard Schnellenberger is doing at Florida Atlantic University what he's done in the past at Miami and Louisville -- building a topnotch college football team that wins games. Just four seasons into his newest endeavor, the coach and his Owls are poised to make the jump from Division I-AA to I-A and become official members of the Sun Belt Conference. The Owls have already won five road games this year, knocking off three Division I-A schools en route to a perfect 5-0 record. Standing between this newly arrived football juggernaut and an undefeated season are just seven more opponents, the first of which is Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at Lockhart Stadium (301 NW 12th Ave., Fort Lauderdale). The Indians come in struggling, with just one win this year, matching their single victory during last season's dismal 1-11 campaign. So how are the Owls doing it? When they have the ball, senior quarterback Jared Allen directs an offensive attack that leans heavily on tight end Anthony Crissinger-Hill, a six-foot-three junior whom Schnellenberger has compared favorably to former Hurricane Kellen Winslow. On defense, the unit takes its cue from senior linebacker Chris Laskowski, a four-year starter built from the Zach Thomas mold of undersized leaders. Kickoff for Saturday's game is 4 p.m. General-admission tickets cost $15. Call 954-523-3309. -- Russ Evans

Spin for Kids

Give more than effort

SAT 10/23

You can sweat your ass off for a couple of hours, all in the name of charity. "Spin for the Wishes," a two-hour spin-a-thon, its proceeds going directly to the Make-a-Wish Foundation (benefiting terminally ill children around the world), will give you just enough motivation to get on a stationary bike for an afternoon of goodwill. The event will be directed by spinning guru Billy Garcia at Olympia Gym (20335 Biscayne Blvd., Aventura). To make the extreme cardio workout more exciting, massage therapists, gourmet catering, and Japanese drummers will be on hand. Registration costs $35, and each participant must tally at least $100 in pledges from friends and family. Call 954-261-0550. -- Russ Evans
