Party on Sistrunk
Sistrunk was not the ideal place to hang out a few years ago. Abandoned buildings and empty lots do not exactly lend themselves to a celebratory atmosphere. Not anymore. The historical street is now superfancy, with brick-designed crosswalks and landscaped medians. And this Saturday, the fancy new street will host the annual Sistrunk Historical Street Parade and Festival to celebrate Black History Month.
Starting at 9 a.m., the parade will kick off at New Mount Olive Baptist Church, turning north at Ninth Avenue, then traveling down Sistrunk Boulevard to NW 22nd Avenue. After the parade, the festival will include live entertainment -- with two stages -- vendor booths with food, arts and crafts, merchandise, and information. If you're looking to keep the little ones busy, the Kidz Zone will feature bounce houses, crafts, a videogame truck, and other activities to wear them out. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Festival gates are located at the corners of NW 27th Avenue and Sistrunk Boulevard and at NW 24th Avenue and Sistrunk. Call 954-687-3471, or visit sistrunkfestival.org.
