Ponies Are Running!
Gulfstream season's in full swing
Got the itch to place a few wagers on some eminent thoroughbred competition? Or are you not the betting type but love to get outside and partake of South Florida's finer offerings, equine or otherwise? Either way, you're in luck, as Gulfstream Park (901 S. Federal Hwy., Hallandale Beach) has officially raised the curtain on its 2005 winter meet. For the upcoming week, live racing action is scheduled on Thursday and Friday, followed by a full docket of major stakes races during "Super Saturday." Sunday puts a cap on the weekend with another full menu of live racing, and there's even more action off the track surface all week long. Gulfstream simulcasts racing from around the country every day its gates are open, so you can keep an eye on the ponies from coast to coast. If the wagering tent does end up catching your eye, whether it's for a race on-site or one going on elsewhere, you might want to do yourself a favor and pick up a Daily Racing Form to help you make a semi-educated decision. Or you can close your eyes and throw darts at the program (which can be as effective as bad handicapping). Park admission costs $5, and parking is free. Post time for the first race each day is 12:45 p.m. Call 954-454-7000. -- Russ Evans
Try -- just try -- to walk away without adopting
This weekend, Quiet Waters Park (401 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach) wants you to show your love for man's best friend, as it presents the 2005 Pets Festival and the K-9 Sports Challenge. Festival activities, which begin at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, include K-9 frisbee tournaments, animal rescue and breeding groups, giveaways, and plenty of animal-related vendors and services. Additionally, Broward County's Animal Regulations Division will hold a Pet Adoptions in the Park program all weekend long, giving homeless furries a place to live and be loved. Adoption fees cost $60 per pet. Admission to the event is free, but Quiet Waters charges $1 per person for park entry. Call 954-360-1315. -- Russ Evans
