Public Abscess Channel
Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach is a play about an unabashedly fey talk-show host on a public access channel and his macho, meathead assistant. In 1998, it nearly induced an orgasm for a New York Times reviewer, who called playwright Paul Rudnick a zinger-meister and warned folks that Rudnicks play was so funny that they could suffocate. (Rudnick was the anonymous creative force behind Sister Act.)
Now Mr. Charles is hitting the stage of the Rising Action Theatre in a double-billing with the world premiere of another one-act, the musical Mexico City. The latter is written by David Leddick, a prolific local gay author and performer who appears to share a wardrobe with Tom Wolfe. Leddicks got acting chops, and hes starring in both plays, which contain adult themes and nudity.
Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach and Mexico City play at 8 p.m. at the Rising Action Theatre (840 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park). Tickets cost $29.95, or $49.95 with a three-course meal at Primavera Restaurant. Call 954-561-2225, or visit risingactiontheatre.com.
Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 3 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 9. Continues through July 25, 2010
