Punk Rock Lives
It should not come as a surprise that Green Day's seminal 2004 rock opera American Idiot translated magnificently to the stage. The multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning record was made by the hugely successful punk-rock trio with grand operatic intentions -- in the vein of other rock operas like the Who's Tommy. It was a project that could have either flopped big time or succeeded on a grand scale. And onstage, the story of three lifelong friends dissatisfied with suburban life was a home run. Witness what happens as these friends pursue big-city dreams and Green Day songs such as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" come to life when American Idiot comes to Fort Lauderdale this week.
Opening night is Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Broward Center for Performing Arts, located at 201 SW Fifth Ave. The show runs through April 6. Tickets cost $34.50 to $114.50. Call 877-311-7469, or visit browardcenter.org.
