Saturday, Gold Coast Skating Rink will be full of hot female bodies tackling one another on roller skates. The sport of roller derby is a fast, dangerous one: When the scoring player laps members of the opposing team, points get awarded, so from both ends, lots of blocking and tackling ensue. Females go down. These public matches are called bouts, and today, the Gold Coast Derby Grrls will play the Garden State Rollergirls. Music will be provided by the house DJ, George Van Orsdel, and at the bout, there will be fun and danger (even for you) to be had: You can sit at a section marked off as the suicide seats, where these hard-hitting, superfast girls can slam right into you. So make sure to bring your crash pad, rent one for $5, or buy one for $10 at the merch booth. They dont need it, but you can find your liquid courage at the rink: Gold Coast keeps a stocked bar. Bring your own chair or cushion as well. Tickets cost $10 to $12, kids under 12 get in for free, and there will also be some little ladies collecting donations for Toys for Tots. Doors open at 5 p.m., but the bout starts at 6 p.m. at the Gold Coast Skating Rink (2604 S. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale). Visit goldcoastderbygrrls.com and brownpapertickets.com/event/132594.
