The art of burlesque had its beginnings in the 1900s, when the Greek and European cultures thought of it as a bawdy form of theatrical satire. Burlesque might have started out as theatrical satire, but women like Gypsy Rose Lee and Bettie Page took a more taboo - and sexually teasing - approach with their stage shows - thank God. Decades later, the ladies onstage may have changed, but the traditional American stylings of burlesque are still very much intact.
In a flurry of feathers, vintage lingerie, and throwback tunes, local troupe Cupcake Burlesque pays proper homage to the ladies of yesteryear. On Saturday, the Cupcake Burlesque troupe presents "Around the World" at Respectable Street. Each of the eight ladies, including Jenna Beth, Betty Pickle, and Cherry Mae, will represent a different country in her act, giving you a taste of what the world has to offer. Hosted by Desiree DuBois, the evening kicks off with the titillating group of ladies taking the stage at 10 p.m.
Respectable Street is located at 518 Clematis St. in West Palm Beach. Admission is $10 at the door or $8 presale and can be purchased at brownpapertickets.com. Visit cupcakeburlesque.com.
