In todays trademarked world, independently-owned businesses have become an endangered species. So when a joint is able to not only thrive and flourish, but also act as a needed haven for locals word gets around. In Lake Worth, that word is Jetsetter.
Drinking at the Jetsetter Lounge (1132 N. Dixie Hwy., Lake Worth) is like being thrown through a cartoon time warp and landing in George Jetsons post-credits watering hole: concave egg chairs and cocktails served up in lab beakers herald a time when life was, or will be, swingin. To keep things fresh and you entertained, owner Mike Jones has put together the ultimate Labor Day weekend party: Jetsetfest IV!
This three-day bash has everything you need to turn this hometown weekend into a mini tropical vacation. On Friday see the unveiling of a new art exhibit called Come Fly With Me: The Suburbans on Vacation In it, David Paul Seymour creates shindig-ready cartoon portraits of gals in miniskirts, surfboarding psychobillys, and plastered pink elephants. Then stick around because Palm Beachs grittiest, spittiest, funniest group of punk rockers, Die Stinkin are rocking the tiki shack at 11 p.m. (Chaos will ensue.)
Come back on Saturday, from 3 to 7 p.m. and grab a seat (and several cocktails), because local comedians are taking the stage. Their goal? Making you laugh until rum shoots out of your nose. When youre all toweled off, venture out into the tiki garden and check out Hassan Patterson as he paints large-scale works live, and browse through the vendor showcase set up in the grass folks will be selling everything from vintage threads and jewelry to art (If you miss it on Saturday, the vendors have your back on Sunday as well). Then shake a tail feather to the surf rock stylings of The Dillengers when they command control of the stage at 10 p.m.
You can sleep the whole thing off on Monday, but under no circumstances can you miss Sunday at the Jetsetter. In addition to the Intergalactic Polynesian Luau (a feast fit for a king, but theyll serve it to you too), watch the hypnotic and talented queen of kitsch, The Uncanny Marina, as she juggles fiery wands for your pleasure. Also on the agenda is a tiki, retro, vintage, and all things ending in billy inspired fashion show, put on by local designer FashionTramp. Finally, wrap the weekend up with rum-laced dancing to the biggest reggae party around: Bradley Brown and Friends Reggae All-Star Jam.
In addition to all of these scheduled events, there will be more rum and food specials than you can shake a grass mini-skirt at. So go on, baby! Start Swingin! Call 561-533-7999, or visit www.jetsetterlounge.com.
