One of countless survival stories to splinter from the tragic tree of Holocaust fiction, Barbara Lebow's A Shayna Maidel opened off-Broadway in 1985. It has become an enduring testament to perseverance, family, and the horrible reverberations of Nazism. It charts the relationship between two Polish sisters -- one a concentration-camp survivor and the other an Americanized New Yorker -- in Manhattan, just after the end of the Second World War. In at least the third South Florida production in the past 22 years, the Broward Stage Door's revival of A Shayna Maidel has played to packed audiences for nearly two months. This production has been extended twice, and there are only two weekends left to catch it.
The Stage Door Theatre is located at 8036 W. Sample Road in Margate. Showtimes are 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays, 8 p.m. Fridays, and 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays, closing October 28. Tickets cost $38. Call 954-344-7765, or visit stagedoortheatre.com.
